Do you need a “crack”? What that noise actually is
By the team at Matrix Health & Performance, Ivanhoe East
The cracking or popping noise that can come with hands-on treatment is one of the most misunderstood things in our field. For some people it is the whole point, they do not feel sorted until they have heard it. For others it is exactly what puts them off booking in the first place.
So here is a plain-language explanation of what that noise actually is, whether it is safe, and whether you even need it.
What the noise actually is
The technical name is a high-velocity, low-amplitude technique, but the sound itself is simpler than people imagine. Your joints are surrounded by fluid that contains dissolved gases. When a joint is moved quickly through its range, the pressure changes and a small gas bubble releases. That pop is the sound you hear.
It is not bones grinding, nothing is being put back in place, and nothing is snapping. It is a gas release, closer to the science behind cracking your knuckles than anything dramatic.
Is it safe?
In trained hands, and with the right person, it is a safe and well-established technique. We assess carefully first and only use it where it is appropriate for you, and never without explaining it and getting your consent.
It is also not for everyone or every situation, and that is completely fine. If you would rather not have it, or if it is not suitable for your presentation, we simply use other techniques instead.
Do you actually need it?
This is the part worth hearing clearly: no, you do not need the crack to get better. It is one tool among many. Soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, exercise, and advice can all achieve the same goals without it.
The noise is not a measure of how good the treatment was. Feeling looser afterwards is common, but it comes from the movement restored to the joint, not from the sound itself. A session with no cracking at all can be just as effective.
The bottom line
If the noise reassures you, that is fine. If it makes you nervous, that is equally fine, and it is never something we would spring on you. Treatment at Matrix is always explained before we do it, and shaped around what you are comfortable with.
If nervousness about the crack has been the thing stopping you booking, it does not need to be. Come in, tell us, and we will work the way that suits you.
