Shoulder pain

Shoulder pain has a habit of showing up in the small things, reaching for a seatbelt or sleeping on one side.

Osteopathic treatment for shoulder pain at Matrix Health & Performance

Shoulder problems range from rotator cuff irritation and impingement through to stiffness that limits everyday reach. The shoulder rarely works alone, so we assess the neck, upper back, and how the whole region moves. From there we build a plan to settle the pain and rebuild capacity.

What it can feel like

  • Pain reaching overhead or behind your back
  • Discomfort sleeping on the affected side
  • Weakness or a catching sensation with certain movements
  • Stiffness that has crept in gradually over weeks

Common contributing factors

  • Repetitive overhead or loaded movements
  • An old injury that never fully recovered
  • Reduced movement through the neck and upper back
  • A sudden increase in training or activity

Our perspective

How we think about this

The shoulder almost never works alone. It depends on the neck and upper back moving well behind it, so when those stiffen up, the shoulder takes more load than it should and starts to complain. Treating only the shoulder often means the problem keeps coming back.

We settle the painful structures down and, at the same time, look at why the shoulder got overloaded in the first place. Then we rebuild capacity gradually, because a shoulder that is genuinely stronger is a shoulder that stays better.

Common questions about shoulder pain

Can an osteopath treat rotator cuff problems?+

Yes. We assess the shoulder along with the neck and upper back it depends on, settle the irritated structures with hands-on treatment, and build a staged strengthening plan. Most rotator cuff problems respond well to this kind of care without needing injections or surgery.

Why does my shoulder hurt more at night?+

Night pain is common with rotator cuff irritation and frozen shoulder, partly because lying on the shoulder compresses sensitive structures. It usually improves as the underlying problem settles. We can also suggest sleeping positions that take pressure off it in the meantime.

Do I need a scan before getting shoulder pain treated?+

Usually not as a first step. Scans of the shoulder often show changes that are normal for your age and not the source of pain. A careful physical assessment usually identifies the problem. If imaging would genuinely change the plan, we will say so and help arrange it.

How long does shoulder pain take to recover?+

Shoulders are honest but slow. Many problems improve meaningfully within weeks, while conditions like frozen shoulder run a longer course measured in months. We will give you a realistic timeframe based on your presentation rather than an optimistic guess.
